Heads-up on the Sunday Times

Jim Horne sent word that this Sunday’s New York Times crossword will not be available for online solving. That’s right—no Java applet, no Across Lite version. Just the newspaper and a downloadable, printable PDF. If you don’t get the newspaper and you don’t have a printer, you’ve still got a few days to figure out how you’ll get your NYT puzzle fix this weekend.

Any thoughts on the reason for this?

Generally it means that there’s something unusual about the puzzle—deviations from the norm in the grid or clue numbering.

Yeah, last time this happened it was because there were dotted lines in the grid to represent origami folds, or something like that.

Some of the white squares are special. I thought about litzing the puzzle and indicating those squares with circles, and including a Notepad explaining how the circled squares should be modified. But after test-solving it, I agree that the online experience would not be satisfactory at all. The Times made the right decision.
